Sturgis Garden Club has been in existence for more than 60 years. Organized in 1955 and federated in 1956, the club is a member of the Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The projects and programs of Sturgis Garden Club support the goals and objectives of the NGC and MGC and promote a love of gardening and community pride.
Among projects is the annual geranium sale, which members are gearing up for currently. The sale, which serves as a fundraiser for the club, is planned for May 18, with orders due by May 10.For further information on the sale, contact Dorrie Kelly, (269) 651-6484, or Gloria Martin, (269) 651-2710.
Profits from the sale enable the club members to take part in projects including purchasing hanging baskets for downtown and planting at Sturges-Young Auditorium. The club also decorates the auditorium and other locations including Sturgis Hospital for the holidays.
Club members sponsor a Garden of the Month award as well, given to one Sturgis resident per month during the summer months. With just over 30 members, the club meets at 12:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at various locations.
Program committee members Mary Kay Kunce, Gloria Martin and Jeannie Gerchow recently met to discuss the slate of upcoming programs. Among them are planned an annual picnic, a holiday luncheon, a presentation on organic gardening, a trip to Maple Wood Nature Center in LaGrange, Ind., a presentation on birds of Cuba, and more.
